The decision targets applicants deemed more likely to become “public charges” by relying on US public assistance. Affected countries include Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Russia, Nepal, and several nations across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Non-immigrant visas, such as tourist, student, or business visas, remain unaffected. Authorities say the pause will continue while procedures are reassessed to prevent entry of individuals likely to use welfare and public benefits.
